José Gómez Mustelier, Campeón Olímpico en boxeo Olimpiada Moscú-80
Este joven de origen campesino oriundo del municipio de Colombia, provincia de Las Tunas, nació en una fecha significativa para los cubanos 28 de enero de 1959, se incorporó al boxeo desde los quince años y a los dieciocho discutía el campeonato nacional de los 71 Kg y se consagró a los diecinueve en el campeonato mundial de Belgrado, Yugoslavia, 1978, al coronarse Campeón Mundial en los 75 Kg, ya era una estrella, por su fuerte pegada y el deseo de victoria que imprimía en cada salida.
En la XXII Olimpiada de Moscú se presentó luego de accidente automovilístico que hicieron peligrar sus posibilidades, pero fue subiendo con la competencia: su primera combate frente al desconocido zambiano Enock Shama, terminó con un apretado 3-2 de los jueces; para el segundo combate frente al coreano Mung Jan Bong se recupera de un peligroso conteo de protección en el primer asalto y se impone por KO en el segundo;la pelea de semifinales frente al rumano Valentín Silaghi fue victoria de 5-0.
En la final José Gómez tuvo frente a sí al soviético Viktor Savchenko, un hombre de tremenda calidad y apoyado por su público, fue un duro combate que terminó 4-1 para el cubano. Que completaba así un ciclo competitivo con el título de Campeón Olímpico
