Armando Martínez, campeón olímpico de boxeo en Moscú-80
Armando Martínez fue la revelación del equipo de boxeo que representó a Cuba en la XXI Olimpiada de Moscú-80, era de la provincia de Ciego de Ávila y se caracterizaba por su gran estatura, tenía 19 años cuando defendió los colores de la isla en la división de los 71 Kg, era boxeador de las tres distancias las que dominaba con técnica y elegantes movimientos.
Su trayectoria para la medalla aurea comenzó con el polaco Zygmunt Gosiewski a quien venció por 5-0; la segunda pelea con el ugandés George Kabuto fue victoria por RSC en el primer asalto; al brasileño Francisco C. de Jesús le ganó el pleito por 5-0 y en semifinales encontró al checoslovaco Jan Franek vencido en el segundo asalto por RSC. La final fue contra el local Aleksandr Koshkin, favorito y con el público atronando a su favor, su derroche de técnica y calidad fue acayando al público y el veredicto final fue de 4-1.
