Si José Maceo no fuera uno de nuestros grandes paladines libertarios y además sus hazañas no fueran conocidas bastaría esta semblanza que de él hace Martí para tener una idea de este General negro, cubano hasta la médula y de un arrojo y lealtad a Cuba que lo hacen digno de la leyenda que lo rodea.
Cuando se encuentra con Martí hacía menos de un mes que había sido encontrado por los suyos cuando tras una emboscada enemiga se tiró por un barranco para no caer prisionero y tuvo que vagar varios días por la brava serranía solo, rompiendo monte con las manos, apenas sin probar bocado pero con la determinación de unirse a las fuerzas cubanas que peleaban en la zona. Al encontrarse con Martí ya manda tropas y deslumbra su genio militar:
“26.-A formar, con el sol. A caballo, soñolientos. Cojea la gente, aún no repuesta. Apenas comieron anoche. Descansamos, a eso de las 10, a un lado y otro del camino. De la casita pobre envían de regalo una gallina al “general Matías”,-y miel.
