Por esos montes guantanameros desde la Guerra Grande, no solo había patriotas sino grupos de guerrillero[1], gente de la zona y conocedores del terreno, que vieron siempre en los independentistas, enemigos de su tranquilidad. En la zona de Guantánamo, estos grupos fueron famosos por sus desmanes y su capacidad de rastrear al adversario y estaban formados por descendientes de los primeros habitantes de estas tierras, de ahí el nombre que le da Martí, los “Indios de Garrido” según lo escuchó de los campesinos.
