Apuntes Martianos (7)
En estos días que citamos sigue presente la curiosidad de sabio de José Martí apuntando un acervo de costumbres y tradiciones cotidianas del campesino cubano, acostumbrado a vivir con la naturaleza y seguirla en su sabiduría para curarse, comer, defenderse y ser personas mejores. El 21 recibe la triste noticia de la muerte del general Flor Crombet, es un aguerrido mulato descendiente de franco-haitianos, veterano de la Guerra Grande, amigo de Antonio Maceo. Ambos habían llegado a Cuba por Baracoa unos días antes que Martí, cayó mortalmente herido el 9 de abril, la partida de Luis González traen la noticia y la duda esperanzadora muestra el afecto por el gran amigo.
“21.-A las 6 salimos con Antonio, camino de San Antonio. En el camino nos detenemos a ver derribar una palma, a machetazos al pie, para coger una colmena, que traen seca, y las celdas llenas de hijos blancos. Gómez hace traer miel, exprime en ella los pichones, y es leche muy rica. A poco, sale por la vereda el anciano negro y hermoso, Luis González, con sus hermanos, y su hijo Magdaleno, y el sobrino Eufemio. Ya él había enviado aviso a Perico Pérez, y con él, cerca de San Antonio, esperaremos la fuerza. Luis me levanta del abrazo. ¡Pero qué triste noticia! ,¿Será verdad que ha muerto Flor, el gallardo Flor?-¿qué Maceo fue herido en traición de los indios de Garrido; que José Maceo rebanó a Garrido de un machetazo ? Almorzábamos buniato y puerco asado cuando llegó Luis-ponen por tierra, en un mantel blanco, el casabe de su casa (…) “[1]
Marcados aún por la mala noticia y desconociendo la suerte de los expedicionarios cubanos que acompañaban a Flor Crombet, la acotación del día 22 nos deja una estampa cotidiana de un día en el campamento mambí, los sentimientos encontrados y la inquietud lo llenan de incertidumbre, tras sus huellas marcha una fuerza española y aún no saben la magnitud del peligro:
“22.–Día de espera impaciente.-Baño en el río, de cascadas y hoyas y grandes piedras, y golpes de cañas a la orilla. Me lavan mi ropa azul, mi chamarreta. A mediodía vienen los hermanos de Luis, orgullosos de la comida casera que nos traen: huevos fritos, puerco frito y una gran torta de pan de maíz. Comemos bajo el chubasco; y luego de un macheteo, izan una tienda, techada con las capas de goma. Toda la tarde es de noticias inquietas(…)”[2]
